Reading Techniques


Stage 1: Skimming for getting the gist and grasping the structure of the text

  1. Non-stop running of the eyes over the text 
  2. READ:
    1. Titles and subtitles
    2. The first and the last paragraph of a text OR 
    3. The abstract, intro and the conclusion of a paper
    4. Read topic sentences of the paragraphs
  3. DO NOT worry about the words you do not understand 
  4. This stage gives a general idea about the text, a brief introduction of the text and its structure.

Stage 2: Scanning and searching for specific information within the text

  1. Before scanning DETERMINE FOR WHAT specific information you read the text like: word, name, phrase, number etc.
  2. Run your eyes and SEARCH for these specific KEY WORDS and pay attention to highlighted parts (bold, italic, colored, underlined etc.)
  3. SCAN through the page top-down, back and forth
  4. We usually read to learn about something specific. This stage tells you where this specific information is within the text.

Stage 3: Reading for the detail
  1. Read every word carefully 
  2. Think about the overall  meaning of the sentences and paragraphs

SUMMARY
  1. Skim the text non-stop read mainly the anchor parts of the text (titles, topic sentences etc.)
  2. Scan the text and search for the parts where specific information are hidden
  3. Read the body of the text and think about the details
