Stage 1: Skimming for getting the gist and grasping the structure of the text
- Non-stop running of the eyes over the text
- READ:
- Titles and subtitles
- The first and the last paragraph of a text OR
- The abstract, intro and the conclusion of a paper
- Read topic sentences of the paragraphs
- DO NOT worry about the words you do not understand
- This stage gives a general idea about the text, a brief introduction of the text and its structure.
Stage 2: Scanning and searching for specific information within the text
- Before scanning DETERMINE FOR WHAT specific information you read the text like: word, name, phrase, number etc.
- Run your eyes and SEARCH for these specific KEY WORDS and pay attention to highlighted parts (bold, italic, colored, underlined etc.)
- SCAN through the page top-down, back and forth
- We usually read to learn about something specific. This stage tells you where this specific information is within the text.
Stage 3: Reading for the detail
- Read every word carefully
- Think about the overall meaning of the sentences and paragraphs
SUMMARY
- Skim the text non-stop read mainly the anchor parts of the text (titles, topic sentences etc.)
- Scan the text and search for the parts where specific information are hidden
- Read the body of the text and think about the details
